The Value of Silk
A Gift from Nature
Silk is one of the world’s most extraordinary natural fibres. Lightweight, breathable and naturally hypoallergenic, it has long been valued for its ability to regulate temperature, wick away moisture and feel endlessly soft against the skin. What makes it exceptional is not just its elegance, but its quiet functionality. It soothes. It protects. It supports the body’s comfort without demanding attention.
That is why silk has held a place in human culture for centuries. And that is why we believe it deserves a place in childhood too.
A Fibre Worth the Effort
At Petitcocon, we use silk not for extravagance, but for comfort, integrity and care. Its performance makes it ideal for baby products - gentle on sensitive skin, breathable across seasons and naturally low in allergens. But we also know that silk alone can be fragile. So we pair it with cotton, bringing everyday strength and resilience to the softness of silk.
To make this work, we developed a blend entirely from scratch. It wasn’t easy. Silk and cotton are both natural, but they behave very differently. Their fibres respond to moisture, heat and tension in conflicting ways. We spent years refining the balance, weaving and testing until the result felt effortless - a fabric with the best of both worlds.
Our blend has become the foundation of Petitcocon’s product range. You can learn more about how we created it in The Silk Blend.
Why It’s Rare
For all its benefits, silk is not a common ingredient in modern textiles. It is expensive to produce, delicate to handle and unpredictable in large-scale manufacturing. Most commercial fabrics are designed for uniformity and cost-efficiency. Silk, by contrast, resists shortcuts.
That’s why most brands choose synthetic substitutes - fibres that mimic softness, but don’t offer the same natural performance. We chose a different path. We built the infrastructure to work with silk ourselves. Because when the result touches a newborn’s skin, we believe the extra effort is worth it.
A Thought on Ethics
We know that some people question the ethics of silk production. The traditional process involves harvesting cocoons before the moth emerges. We understand these concerns, and we take them seriously. But we also believe that the answer to modern textile challenges does not have to be synthetic alternatives.
Silk is not derived from petrochemicals. It comes from nature. It is biodegradable, and it is processed with care rather than fossil fuel. At a time when more and more fibres are made from plastic, we believe that choosing a natural, protein-based fibre - even when it requires thoughtful consideration - remains the gentler path.
We choose silk not blindly, but with care and purpose. Because making responsible decisions is not only about what we use, but also how we use it and why.
